Lost Beneath the Sea, originally developed as Lost in Davy Jones' Locker, is a comic story written and drawn by Carl Barks. It features Donald Duck, Scrooge McDuck, Huey, Dewey and Louie Duck, Clerkly and many Martians, including the Martian Chief. Davy Jones is also mentioned.

Description[]

After Scrooge McDuck's Number One Dime sinks with the S.S. Fatsonia, Scrooge and his nephews travel to the bottom of the sea in an experimental bathyscaph to retrieve it. What they found is more fantastical than they could have imagined: armored Martians stealing sunken ships for scrap metal to counteract an iron shortage on their home planet! And, in their desperate situation, the Martians are ill-inclined to believe Scrooge's story about his Dime, and take the Ducks for spies…

Behind the scenes[]

This story was first published in 1963 in Uncle Scrooge #46. It was reprinted in Walt Disney Comics Digest #10, Uncle Scrooge #149, Uncle Scrooge Adventures #17, Uncle Scrooge McDuck in Color #43, in the British Super Mage #6 and Australian Giant #308 and #697, and, of course, in the Carl Barks Library.

The story is one of the few in which Carl Barks explicitly depicted the Number One Dime's "lucky" ability as real, as opposed to, at best, a superstition shared by Scrooge and Magica. This has drawn criticism from Barks-purists who would otherwise like to ignore the notion (including Don Rosa, who went out of his way to dispute it in The Richest Duck in the World).
