In the comicsEdit

Crete, the biggest island of Greece, was the 'playground' where Carl Bark's classic adventure story, 'The Fabulous Philosopher's Stone' took place.

According to the Junior Woodchucks' Guidebook, Crete was the headquarters of the Saracen pirates who also used to have a haven built in the North Coast of Sicily. They had built a city in a great cave called the 'Labyrinth'.

Apparently, the 'Labyrinth' was indeed the mythical labyrinth where the Minotaur resided. According to the Guidebook, the Labyrinth was near the ruins of the palace of King Minos, but it remains undiscovered, due to an earthquake which stroke hundreds of years ago, blocking the entrance of the complex.

Locations in CreteEdit

At the site of Knossos.

The following locations on Crete are depicted in the comics:

  • Unnamed port,
  • King Minos' Palace (Knossos),
  • Labyrinth,
  • Creatan hotel,
  • Ironworks,
  • Hardware Market (referred only),
  • Silversmith's (referred only),
  • Tin-Maker's (referred only),
  • Junkyard.

Notably, all the stores are referred to in singular number, from which we can deduce that the story takes place in a part of a single Cretan city. That would be most probably Heraklion, the modern city in which the archaeological site of Knossos is located.

Crete (Greek: Κρήτη; [kriti]) is the largest and most populous of the Greek islands, the fifth-largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, and one of the thirteen administrative regions of Greece. It forms a significant part of the economy and cultural heritage of Greece while retaining its own local cultural traits (such as its own dialect, poetry, and music). Crete was the centre of the Minoan civilization (c. 2700–1420 BC), the earliest civilization in Europe, comprising the first palaces in Europe.
